A song can be anything. It can blend genres or focus on just one. It can make a big statement about life and the human condition, or it might just express a certain emotion. When you listen to an instrument, it can communicate an endless array of emotions or amplify one emotion. Subtly. Quietly. Or, angrily! LOUDLY! Through its own unique language and voice, each instrument can tell a story from beginning to end, and all its emotional cadences.

When an artist reflects on what is to come next, whether a new song or the next note, there is no puzzle to be solved. An artist simply has to dispense with self-doubt and anxious self-interpretation. After all, negativity ends up ruining the music and creative process. Focus is needed for good work, and the best condition to achieve focus is to have a mind completely, not partially, devoid of self-doubt.

Flow is what an artist needs, and an artist cannot tap deep into flow if every action, every decision and every movement is accompanied by interpretation. When in doubt about what concepts or themes to explore, an artist can simply start with emotion since it is the most fundamental fuel of all art.

When one cries, one usually doesn’t interpret why he or she is crying. It’s already apparent in the moment. Likewise, when a songwriter puts to verse a profound epiphany, the magic of that epiphany is already evident in the emotional excitement behind discovering it. Constant self-interpretation is the great inhibitor of authentic emotional expression in music and all art.

Every section of a song has some emotion fueling it even if a particular section might be monotonous, like a repetitive synth bass repeating one note. Even the most monotonous parts contain within them emotions. If a listener feels anything from listening to an instrument, then that monotonous section of a song indeed contains emotional content. Monotony can build up to even more exciting entries and transitions into another part of a song where the drums heighten and the singer pours out deeply felt emotions. A song is a continuous stream of emotions.

When writing the first notes of a song, there's no need to feel confused or nervous. From one note grows another and then another and then another until an unseen network, harmonious and vivid, comes to life. The first lines of a song's vocals might be a masterful hook grabbing the audience's attention, or they might give off a subtle effect that doesn't immediately evoke a strong emotional reaction. Doesn't matter. If it's written with purity of heart, then the rest of the process will soon transform from a march through a blinding snowstorm into a blissful walk in paradise. Besides, anything can be revised ad infinitum, so there is no need to be nervous when writing a song during the beginning, middle or end stage of the writing process.

Let’s look at music videos. When performing for a music video, there is no need to ask oneself how to perform or how to move the right way. How should one's facial expression be, or how will all this turn out in the editing stage? Doesn’t matter. Extra layers of thought are unnecessary added weight. Thinking itself is a function of the mind that is best utilized in a lightweight fashion like the flying fists of a fighter shadowboxing with dumbbells no heavier than 2 lb.

Every pound counts. The longer one premeditates on the how behind an action, then the more dull and confused each subsequent action becomes.

When an audience listens to a guitarist perform a jazz improvisation, they don't want to feel like they're listening to a rehearsed session. They really want to feel like they're hearing an artist express him or herself in real-time no differently than how a professor gives a passionate lecture on quantum mechanics or how a shopkeeper enthusiastically breaks down the strengths and weaknesses of each product. What an audience, student or customer wants to feel is that the performer, teacher and shopkeeper know their stuff. So, if an artist keeps practicing and feels that raw, personal connection with his or her art, then, why should the artist overthink? Because of nervousness? Why? Because of what people might think? Again, why? The audience just wants to hear the music of the artist’s soul. There is no method behind how to do so except to just enjoy the process.

Performance and songwriting in the privacy of one’s creative studio are very different processes, but fundamentally, the vividness of their creative output is based on how comfortable an artist feels with his or her own art. Think quick to let the passion exude across the stage, across the screen and across the page so that people know how much you love doing what you do.

When a great idea appears, excitement can trigger a euphoria that makes an artist feel invincible... but then, comes execution. Hurdles upon hurdles inevitably wait just as with all great endeavors and uncertainty can plant the seeds for self-doubt and fear in an artist with a great idea. What lays on the other side of all great ideas? A long journey which only you can experience.

A door presents itself before you. On the other side of that door, a long uphill comprised of other doors appears. Each door can take you to a myriad of places that makes you realize eventually that the journey is non-linear. It's not just a straight hike uphill. It can also be like an open-world sandbox game full of long side quests and fascinating new locations that might make you want to take a break from your adventure to just take a walk and enjoy the scenery. Indeed, this long journey on the other side of great ideas is usually non-linear. It can be hard to stay focused on the main path.

No one knows, not even you, what words, sounds, images or emotional conflict awaits you on the other side of your great idea. Countless great ideas have already appeared in the minds of others throughout the entire history of humanity. But, this particular idea and journey are uniquely your own. Your eyes and ears will experience that which no one else in history ever has or ever will.

Time for an adventure! New works of art and experiences await!
